Wrestling Singlets

Singlets are tight and uncomfortable. At least that is how spectators who have never put one on view them. Stretchy and spandex, they hug the figure more closely than any other piece of clothing in sports. Wrestlers often hear a lot of homosexual jokes from mockers addressing how good they can see their “package” or how firm it makes their butt look. The one-piece “leotard,” as some joke, that they wear is halter top-like at the top and come down each leg and ends a few inches above the knee, hugging the body all the way down. Some have lower sides under the armpits and others have arm holes closer to the shoulder. All poking fun aside, wrestling singlets are sleek by design. There job is to prevent wrestlers from gaining control of one another by illegal measures; the strength and grip of the hands are the only thing that should determine the outcome of a match. They are produced in many different designs. Each wrestling team can order their wrestling singlets in the colors of their logo. Blue, black, red, white, they can have any number of patterns.

Usually, matching headgear accompanies the singlet. Headgear is a necessary accessory in the wrestling world with one main function, to prevent cauliflower ear. Cauliflower ear can occur when a wrestler takes a hard blow to the ear. When trauma happens in the ear area, blood clots can form, cartilage can lose blood flow, and cartilage dies, causing the ear to appear swollen or puffy. Headgear has immeasurably helped prevent this deformation, but when it does occur when headgear falls off in the middle of a match, action can be taken to limit its effects. An early doctor’s visit can prevent extremely ugly cases of cauliflower ear; if the blood clot is drained before too much time passes and compression is applied against both sides of the ear, deformity is unlikely to occur. The longer you wait to treat this problem, however, the more damage is likely to set in.

The wrestling singlet is also a social benefit to wrestlers. Some women are known to enjoy hot, sweaty guys in tight spandex rolling around on a mat with one another, tossing, throwing, and using brut strength. Those women turned on by this activity hoot and holler in the stands, vocally supporting their favorite wrestlers. The yells do not go unnoticed. From the mat, wrestlers can hear their supporters screaming from the stands.
