During the height of its popularity, boxing news would often make headlines thanks not only to the popularity of the sport but the often colorful personalities of the individual boxers. The nature of boxing has lent itself to the media’s habit of granting sweeping, epic names to its best fights. For instance, Sugar Ray Robinson’s middleweight title-winning victory over Jake LaMotta has gone down in boxing history as the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” Muhammad Ali’s famous fights against Joe Frazier and George Foreman have been respectively titled, “The Fight of the Century” and “The Rumble in the Jungle.” Another Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier battle that took place near Manila, Philippines is known as “A Thrilla in Manila.” The Tyson-Holyfield match that is infamous for Mike Tyson’s chomping of Evander Holyfield’s ear has been known to some as the “Bite Fight.”

Chief among these men is Don King, whose energetic, half-crazed persona and distinctive, Kim Jong-il-esque hairstyle has earned him a spot as one of boxing’s most famous personalities even though he himself does not have any major boxing prowess to boast of. Nonetheless, he is a common enough figure in boxing news and his fame has made him one of the most successful boxing promoters in modern history. His delivery of this, as well as his inventive ways of introducing and pronouncing the names of various boxing contestants, has earned him a spot as an announcer for boxing matches on HBO. He has even been famous enough to crossover his career into announcing for professional wrestling matches such as those in WCW.
